What Are the Five Love Languages?

The five love languages are a concept developed by Dr. Gary Chapman which suggests that people give and receive love in five different ways. Most people have one primary love language that they identify with, but many of us also have secondary love languages that also affect our preferred ways of giving and receiving love.

The five love languages are:

  1. Quality Time – showing love through special time spent together.
  2. Words of Affirmation – expressions of love through words in the form of compliments, kind words, and encouraging statements.
  3. Physical Touch – expressing love through physical contact, such as cuddling, holding hands, hugging, kissing, or sex.
  4. Receiving Gifts – showing love through the giving of thoughtful presents.
  5. Acts of Service – expressing love through helpful actions, such as cooking, cleaning, or other tasks.

Receiving gifts is one of the five love language categories. But that doesn’t mean that the other love language categories don’t also appreciate thoughtful gift giving that honours their love language. By choosing a present that fits your loved one’s love language, you are showing them that you know and honour the way that they prefer to give and receive love. A love language specific gift will be sure to leave them feeling loved no matter what their love language is!

Quality Time Love Language Gift Guide

Those with the quality time love language like to give and receive love through the special time that they spend with their loved ones. Setting aside quality time where you can give your loved one your undivided attention is the best way to show love to this love language – but it can be hard to wrap up quality time and put it under the tree! Here are the best gifts for the quality time love language.

Movie Night Gift Box

Your friends and family with the quality time love language will love being treated to a movie night at home! Create a DIY movie night box with some of their favorite snacks, some new popcorn bowls (check out these cute customizable ones I found from Bed Bath and Beyond) and some cozy socks for the ultimate night in. Or check out some of these pre-made boxes, like the delicious Movie Night Gift Bin from The Popcorn Factory. They will love that your gift isn’t just what’s in the box, but also the quality time you will spend watching your favorite flicks together!

The Adventure Challenge

The Adventure Challenge is the perfect quality time present idea for anyone on your list! Each book includes dozens of hidden challenges to choose from, with only a few hints and tips to let you know what kind of adventure your day will have in store. Simply choose your page, scratch to reveal your adventure, and let the quality time begin! Check out the popular couples edition (or the spicier in bed version), as well as versions for friends, family, and solo adventuring! They also offer packages that come with an instant camera to capture all the fun. This gift is guaranteed to keep gifting fun and quality time all year long!

Tickets or Season Passes

Give the gift of an experience! Whether its an activity you and your loved one already enjoy or something totally new, tickets or season passes are sure to delight. Pick up some tickets to travel, see a concert, visit a landmark, or attend a special event. Or look into season passes for your favourite local zoo, aquarium, gym, or theme park. Don’t forget to grab one for yourself too – for those with the quality time love language, the best part of the gift is the time you will spend together!

Friendship Lamps

It can be hard to spend quality time with someone who is far away. When video calls just aren’t cutting it, your quality time loved one will love these Long Distance Friendship Lamps from Uncommon Goods. No matter how far apart you are, simply tapping your lamp will send the same hue to paired lamps all across the world. It’s an adorable way to show long distance friends, partners, and family that you still spend lots of time thinking of them, even if you’re not able to spend as much time together. You will also love the Long Distance Friendship Frame for an extra personal touch.

Board Games

Board games are an amazing way to spend quality time and bond with people you love! Your quality time loving friend, partner, or family member will love the moments you will share gathered around a new game. Some of my favourites include Telestrations (a drawing version of the classic game Telephone. There is also an adult version called Telestrations After Dark that had me and my friends in stitches at our last game night) and Anomia (a fast-paced word game guaranteed to have everyone shouting and laughing together). Barnes and Noble has an amazing list of giftable game ideas on their website if you’re looking for more inspiration!

Words of Affirmation Love Language Gift Guide

If your partner, friend, or family member has the words of affirmation love language, it means that they value the way you speak about them and to them. Gifts for this love language should never underestimate all the ways that meaningful words and messages can be incorporated into your gift giving. Here are my favourite gift ideas for the words of affirmation love language.

What I Love About You Personalized Book

Sometimes, it can be hard to find the words to tell someone just how much they mean to us. Thankfully, this adorable book is there to help. Fill in the blanks with all of your favourite traits, dreams, and memories with your special person. They will love all the thought that you put into it and cherish your words for years to come.

Engraved Jewellery

A watch, necklace, or bracelet with your personalised message sends some words of affirmation to your loved one every time they wear their beautiful new piece of jewellery. Sustainable brand Monica Vinader makes stunning pieces like the Fiji Chain Bracelet with fully customizable engraving with lots of room for all your words of love. Engraving is always free at Fossil and their watches have up to three lines of space to type your message. I gifted my partner an engraved watch from Fossil for his university convocation a few years ago and he still wears it everyday.

Affirmation Cards

Anyone with the words of affirmation love language knows the power of words. Gifting them a heartfelt and unique deck of affirmation cards will help them harness that power whenever they need some extra inspiration. Self-love guru Louise Hay has plenty of inspiring options to choose from, including the bestselling How to Love Yourself Cards: A Deck of 64 Affirmations. Looking for something even more unique? Check out this shower affirmation set that adds a dose of positivity to every shower! The cards are completely waterproof and will stick to the shower wall when wet for the perfect daily reminder.

Letters or Greeting Cards

Put a personal touch on this year’s gift giving by writing some meaningful messages to the people you love. Choose a card with a sentimental message like some of the unique offerings on Etsy, or create your own personalized greeting card with Funky Pigeon. Or, why not write a letter that expresses how you feel? Putting your feelings into words is the perfect gift for anyone with the words of affirmation love language.

Custom Vinyl Record

They say that when words fail, music speaks. If your words of affirmation friend, partner, or family member is also a music lover, a custom pressed vinyl record from Vinylify is the perfect gift idea! Design your own front and back cover and upload up to 20 minutes of music. Your personalised mix-tape with lyrics that speak to the heart will be a favourite in their record collection for years to come!

Your loved ones with the physical touch love language will appreciate gifts that appeal to their senses and can facilitate physical touch. Here are the best presents for the physical touch love language!

Long Distance Touch Bracelets

It can be difficult to express your physical touch love language when you’re not together. These long distance touch bracelets can make the distance a little easier, whether your loved one is across town or across the country. Once the bracelets are connected, tapping your bracelet whenever you’re thinking about your partner or friend will send a vibration and light to their device. The bracelets can send up to 10 taps at once, making it easy to create your own code to send meaningful physical messages no matter how far apart you are!

Spa Gift Certificate

Everyone loves a trip to the spa – but it will be especially appreciated by anyone with the physical touch love language. Massage Oil Candle

A massage is a beautiful expression of intimacy for people with the physical touch love language. But rather than settling for boring massage oil, why not try something more unique like the Burn Massage Candle from Maude? Simply light the candle and let it burn for 10-15 minutes before blowing it out and using the warm oil to give your partner the perfect massage.

Worry Stone Necklace

People with the physical touch love language are more likely to be comforted by physical sensations in times of stress too. That’s why I love gifting a beautiful worry stone necklace to anyone on my gift list who might be going through a hard time. These necklaces might seem simple, but their design was inspired by traditional worry stones which have been used in many diverse cultures over thousands of years. The pendant’s smooth surface is imprinted with a perfect thumbprint that wearers can rub their fingers across in times of stress. My mom received one as a gift during her cancer treatments almost 20 years ago and still wears it almost everyday!

Acts of Service Love Language Gift Guide

People with the acts of service love language truly believe that actions truly speak louder than words. Buying a present for someone with this love language can be challenging because it is difficult to wrap an action up in a box! When considering gifts for this love language, it’s important to prioritize items that provide a service or make their life easier and more enjoyable. Here are my top five gift ideas for anyone with the acts of service love language!

Personalized Coupons

Customized coupons are a great way to gift acts of service to those that you love! Buy a book of coupons, use a template online (there are some great options available on Etsy), or create your own. Try including coupons to help your loved one with chores, plan a date night, or perform a task that they find unpleasant. Letting them cash in your coupons in exchange for actions from you will help them request acts of service whenever they would appreciate it most.

Smart Home Devices

You can’t always be there to perform acts of service for your loved one. Why not invest in a device that can help them even when you’re not around? Devices like the Google Nest Smart Thermostat or an Amazon Echo can help streamline their lives, homes, and schedules. These neat little tools are sure to make their lives easier and more enjoyable – and are sure to be a hit no matter the occasion!

Thank You Gifts

Those with the acts of service love language don’t just appreciate help from others. It is likely that they also show their love by helping the people that are special to them. Show them how much you appreciate all the acts of service that they’ve given you with a unique thank you gift. I love this beautiful succulent centrepiece from Uncommon Goods or the adorable Thanks Candle from Homesick Candles. These gorgeous gifts are a beautiful way to show gratitude for all the beautiful acts of service that your partner, parent, sibling, or friend has done for you over the years.

Cleaning Service

Rather than just collecting dust on a shelf, gifting your loved one a gift card towards a local cleaning service will put your gift to work for them! For those with the acts of service love language, the gift of a service to keep their home clean and tidy is sure to be a hit.

Breakfast in Bed

Preparing breakfast in bed for someone you love is the ultimate indulgent act of service. Gift them a breakfast tray (I love this beautiful blue and rattan piece from Anthropologie) and a new mug (check out these trending monogrammed tile mugs that are all over social media right now) to elevate the experience. But don’t forget that the real gift is your thoughtful and sweet gesture to pamper them with breakfast in the first place!
